Starlight Stroll 2025

Hi, I'm taking part in St Wilfrid’s Hospice’s Starlight Stroll

St Wilfrid’s Hospice provides high-quality care and support for people across Eastbourne, Seaford, Hailsham, Uckfield, Heathfield (and all points between) with life-limiting illnesses, and any money raised will allow them to continue to provide this to the community.

If you would like to support St Wilfrid’s Hospice, please consider donating to my Starlight Stroll fundraising page! All donations will be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Walking with love, song and laughter and peace ever after

Sunday 14th Sep
As we made sure to leave at the end of the crowd, we were lucky enough to coincide with Marie (prounced Marry) a veteran stroller who has just turned 90

I guess I didn't know what to expect from the event. How it would feel. How long it would take. How much i would walk or wheel.

In my mind's eye I'd imagined some chatting and some quiet contemplative prayer and a fair bit of walking.

What happened was so much more fitting with how Jen lives her life and faith. Marie shared stories from through the decades interspersed with song. The walk was almost entirely flat with a fairly steep short climb on the way to the lanterns. At that point Marie, Abi and I sang Climb Every Mountain which was my highlight of the whole night.

Marie caught a lift with her family from the lantern field leaving Abi and I to be accompanied by the ambulance guys as the last participants in the 2.5 miles back. It had been a long and beautiful night so I mainly sat for the return - thank you Abi 🙏 The noise in the start field was a little more than I'd anticipated and things like this still tend to be over-exerting. Having Sara's chair made it all possible.

As we returned much later than the crowd, the medal presenters at the finish had waited long including the two lovely little ones who presented our medals.

There were some wonderful food trucks so we enjoyed a delicious meal at the end of the evening.

Some other highlights include that Abi registered in order to accompany me, but on the wrong event. So we're now doing a midnight walk next summer!

And unbelievably after a dramatic thunderstorm overnight and yesterday morning and flood-level rain (and over the week) we had no rain for the entire evening but did see some spectacular lightening over the sea.

I was also able to buy and wear a lovely cosy hoodie which I'll now associate with Aunty Jen

I'm so grateful for the work of all hospices and end of life care, for the organisers and volunteers that made this event possible and for my beautiful friends and family.

Jen, may you be held in your deep faith and  unconditional love and may all the smiles and comfort you have brought envelop and ease you now.  Amen.

Thank you supporters 🥰

Walking with Awe

Tuesday 9th Sep
I simply cannot believe what has become possible since signing up to do this starlight stroll.

Below 'Ready' is the south downs way near Southease, 'Steady' is Rathfinny Vineyard and 'Go' is of course Cuckmere and the Seven Sisters

Special thanks to Nicki who has been joining me in walking how and when we could using 52 Ways to  Walk by Annabel Streets.

To Seaford Cycling Without Age Trishaws that made it possible for me to join Seaford Pride Parade along the seafront and so practice both a seated 'walk' and a large event

To Sara who is kindly lending my her wheelchair for Saturday as the distance possible on the day is difficult to predict but looking more and more promising

And to Abi who is accompanying me and available to push the chair at regular intervals as needed

I'm so grateful for all the generous donations and so glad to be able to support the hospice

It seems strange to be so happy about something that carries so much sadness too but knowing my Aunt, it's just exactly right

*Happiness*

It started with the albatross
or at the beginning
It was one of those
The flight
or the landing
or perhaps the flailing ceasing
and easing down to the seas own bed

Knowing well
Known well
A well of knowing
So completely other than well known
Not at all knowing better
Knowing wells

It started with the albatross
or at the beginning
It was one of those

Walking with thanks

Tuesday 19th Aug
Thank you for the sponsors and lovely messages

There are several reasons I'll be walking/wheeling this starlight stroll

They all relate to feeling thankful

My Aunty Jen is living with terminal cancer. She has been there for me through challenging times in my life. So this will be like a walking prayer of thanks and placing the lantern to shine light for Jen, Fred and all who are loving and caring with them.

I'm very thankful that my walking and other capacities are returning after being ill with long covid/M.E for 20 months.

I've been walking an imagined Camino while being ill and it has deepened my appreciation for life; for living with physical illness and for care. I'm so thankful for the love and community that has surrounded me.

I'm thankful for my friends who are facilitating this wheeling/walking, lending wheelchair and sharing in some wheelchair pushing to pace the walk

And I'm thankful for the starlight, one of many things I have found joy in during these slowed months

With love, thanks and care for you all

I did a starlight walk a few years ago. We dressed up as the Mad Hatters and the local photographer took our photo. I was so relieved when it didn’t go in the local paper. But then they used it for marketing the following year!!! Enjoy it Emily.
