Camino 2027 - Week 1

I'm trekking from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela, following the centuries old paths of pilgrims in support of St Wilfrid's Hospice

As I'm about to celebrate my 60th, I knew it was the right time for me to challenge myself and what better way is there than doing it in memory of my dear Mum Joan, who I lost in 2019 and in supporting the St Wilfrid's hospice, both in raising much needed funds and as a way of showing my gratitude and thanks for the empathy and care they gave my mum and the kindness shown to myself and family at such a difficult time.

Now retired, my motto is 'do what you want to do' and here I am, at last looking forward to this fundraising walk which I've wanted to do for years but never had the time!

Mums health journey started many years ago with breast cancer, thankfully she had good period of respite for many years before becoming unwell again.
Living in Folkestone, the town I grew up in, my mum owned a wonderful bookshop 'Browns' I had moved to Eastbourne and married. With the girls growing up my Mum didn't want to miss out on being with them and sharing special occasions and memories. Mum always said she never felt that she had moved but was on a never ending holiday in Eastbourne! She loved living by the theatres and the seafront and waved at the girls' as they drove past every morning to school, a highlight of her daily routine. For those memories and cherished times I shall be forever grateful for.
Mums final challenges when unwell were faced together and having her here in Eastbourne meant we could support her throughout such a difficult journey, one that was eased and supported by St Wilfrid's by her side. How very lucky we were to find the hospice had the room to accept Mum in her final days. Navigating those days without St Wilfred's care and empathy wouldn't have been so smooth and allowed us all to be with her as a family.

St Wilfred's has always been our first charity to support and during lock down my wife raised over £2,000 sewing masks, headbands and scrubs bags for the local DGH and care homes and friends and family.

From the first meeting to discuss the concept of the Camino de Santiago charity walk, It instantly demonstrated the warmth and network of support, and I knew I was doing the right thing, all in memory of my Mum. Seeing everyone work together with collective stories and experiences, its lovely to see everyone achieving personal goals and I'm privileged to be able to join them.
I would be so humbled and grateful if you would kindly consider donating to my fund and help me aim to exceed my target of £1,400.
I can confirm I shall be self funding my trip, therefore 100% of your donations will be going direct to St Wilfrid's Hospice.
Thank you for reading my story and supporting me in raising such vital finds for St Wilfred's Hospice.
Thank you
Fraser
